The Buildings & Grounds Department strives to provide safe, clean, attractive grounds and facilities which support our District’s mission statement; to “provide a challenging education in a safe, supportive environment that empowers all students to become lifelong learners and productive, respectful citizens of our diverse and changing world.”

As we truly are one township, one community and one school district, we desire to be good stewards of the assets and investments placed in our care.


What is Buildings & Grounds?

The Buildings & Grounds Department encompasses the upkeep, repair, cleaning, grounds care and shipping/receiving functions of the District.

How Do I Request Repair Work?

Non-emergency items are addressed through building-level administration and secretaries through the use of SchoolDude. Once received and approved, the request will be assigned and scheduled for completion.

If an emergency exists (defined as: a situation that affects the life or safety of students and staff, causes disruption to the educational process, or is damaging property or belongings), call the Buildings & Grounds Department at 258-6484 x1421. Immediate action will be taken.

South Middleton School District has four educational buildings; the Boiling Springs High School, Yellow Breeches Middle School, Iron Forge Elementary School and W.G. Rice Elementary School.

Asbestos Program

Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Notice

In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials because of its insulating, sound absorbing, and fire retarding capabilities. Virtually any building constructed before the late 1970s contained some asbestos. Intact and undisturbed asbestos materials generally do not pose a health risk. Asbestos materials, however, can become hazardous when, due to damage or deterioration over time, they release fibers. If the fibers are inhaled, they can lead to health problems, such as cancer and asbestosis.

In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) which requires schools to be inspected to identify any asbestos containing materials. Suspected asbestos-containing building materials were located, sampled (or assumed) and rated according to condition and potential hazard. Every three years, the South Middleton School District (SMSD) has conducted a re-inspection to determine whether the condition of the known or assumed asbestos containing materials (ACBM) has changed and to make recommendations on managing and removing the ACBM.

The law further required an asbestos management plan to be in place by July 1989. SMSD developed a plan, as required, which has been continually updated. The plan has several ongoing requirements: publish a notification of management plan availability and the status of asbestos activities; educate and train its employees about asbestos and how to deal with it; notify short-term or temporary workers on the locations of the asbestos-containing building materials; post warning labels in routine maintenance areas where asbestos was previously identified or assumed; follow set plans and procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of asbestos containing building materials; and survey the condition of these materials every six months to assure that they remain in good condition.

The following buildings do not contain asbestos-containing building materials; therefore, no operations and maintenance programs or future inspections are required: Iron Forge Elementary School and Yellow Breeches Middle School.

It is the intention of SMSD to comply with all federal and state regulations concerning asbestos and to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure students and employees a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work. SMSD has completed the physical inspection and preparation of the Asbestos Management plan as required by the 1986 Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The public is welcome to review a copy of the asbestos management plan in the District office or administrative office of the school during regular business hours. Mr. Andrew Glantz is our designated asbestos program coordinator, and all inquiries regarding the asbestos plan and asbestos-related issues should be directed to him at (717) 258-6484.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

South Middleton School Districts has implemented an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in partnership with our pest control vendor. The plan is available for review in the office of the Buildings & Grounds building.

No one may apply any pesticide in or on any school property unless they are PA Department of Agriculture certified and a licensed applicator. This includes ant spray, wasp spray, weed spray, and any other type of insecticide, herbicide or fungicide.

 

Vehicle Use - District-Owned Vehicle Use Procedure

School district employees who wish to use a District-owned vehicle for the transport of students or for business-related trips should read the document "Vehicle Use Procedure SMSD." Complete the associated checklist and forward all documents to the secretary of the Buildings & Grounds Department.

SafeSchools online training directions: Use the first 3 or 4 characters of your school district email address as your username. Once recognized, click on the 'Log Me In' button. At the top of the next page click 'Extra Training' and scroll down to 'Transportation.' Click the 'Van Safety' course and begin the training. When complete, print your completion certificate and forward a copy of your certificate to the Buildings & Grounds Department.
