Health & Safety Plan Update
Posted on 08/18/2021

On Monday, August 16, 2021, the SMSD Board of Directors acted to revise the 21-22 Health and Safety Plan by implementing an indoor mask mandate for all students and staff (K-12).  This indoor mask mandate goes into effect at 12:00am on Friday, August 20, 2021 district wide.  The following summarizes how the district administration intends to implement the revisions directed by the Board, along with other health and safety guidance.

The goal of the indoor mask mandate is to promote consistency and continuity of face-to-face education.

  • Masks
    • Acceptable Masks:  Masks/face coverings that cover the nose and mouth.
    • Masks are to be worn indoors and on school provided transportation, such as school buses and vans.
      • Masks are not required outdoors.
      • Mask breaks will be provided at the discretion of teachers.  Mask breaks are not to be longer than 10-minutes.
  • Contact Tracing
    • Contact tracing is still required this school year.
    • Close contacts are those individuals within 6ft for 15 consecutive (NOT CUMULATIVE) minutes of a person found to have COVID-19.
      • Exclusion of Close Contact:  If both the case and the close contact were wearing masks during the exposure, no quarantine is necessary for the close contact if the close contact was not within 3ft.
      • This exclusion applies to students only, not adults working within the building.
      • Those students and staff who are fully vaccinated do not need to be quarantined if found to be close contacts as long as they show no symptoms of COVID-19.
    • Those identified as a close contact will need to be quarantined for 7, 10, or 14 days (longer if you reside with a positive case) depending on test results and symptom presentation.
  • Social Distancing
    • 3ft physical distance will be maintained in classrooms and at lunch.
    • 3ft physical distance will not be maintained in the hallways, when students use lockers/cubbies, and on school-provided transportation.
    • To avoid unnecessary congestion in hallways, students will continue to use bottle-filling stations in lieu of drinking fountains.
  • Visitors
    • Allowed at the discretion of the building principal.
    • Must honor the mask mandate.

The Health and Safety Plan will be reviewed and updated monthly by SMSD Board of Directors.
