Health Services

According To Jocelyn Elders, former Surgeon General, “You can not educate an unhealthy child and you can not keep an uneducated child healthy.” Our health service staff believes there is a strong relationship between academic achievement and health.

Nursing Services and Staff:

  • Provide assessment and first aid
  • Deal with emergencies and life threatening situations
  • Provide mandated State screenings (ht., wt., vision, hearing, scoliosis, BMI as required by grade level
  • Immunization monitoring to prevent communicable disease
  • Medication administration per physician’s order
  • Schedule and assist with required Dentals and Physicals
  • Health Counseling
  • Provide Referrals to physicians and appropriate agencies
  • Services focus on prevention, early intervention, and strengthening the ability of the students and families to help themselves

When should I keep my child home?

Students should remain home if:

  • they have a temperature of 102 the evening before
  • if they have a temperature of 100 in the morning
  • persistent vomiting
  • persistent diarrhea
  • rash with a fever
  • purulent discharge from the eye
  • nits/lice
  • Strep infection- until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment
  • Chicken pox (varicella)- until 6 days from appearance of the last vesicle or when all lesions are dried or crusted (whichever is first)
  • Impetigo- until 24 hours after treatment
  • Ring worm- return after treatment if covered
  • Asthma- when your child is having acute respiratory distress and the peak flow meter indicates deterioration
